In the 2022/23 campaign, Mokwena helped the team secure the Premier Soccer League, which was their sixth in a row.

In the almost-ending season, the Brazilians have won the African Football League, successfully defended the league title, and have reached the Nedbank Cup final where they will play holders Orlando Pirates.

In the concluded PSL campaign, Downs went 29 games without tasting defeat, and 53 matches in general in a run stretching back to the previous campaign before Cape Town City shattered the dream of becoming the first team in the country to end the league without a loss.

However, Mokwena has cast doubt on whether he will be accorded time to re-build the team if he goes two or more seasons without silverware like Liverpool did under Jurgen Klopp.

“I would love to stay at Sundowns for eight, nine years and do a Pep [Guardiola], or a [Jurgen] Klopp; I would love to, I love Sundowns. I love the club,” the Downs coach said in a presser.

“I give my all for the club and the supporters, but sometimes I say to myself, I don’t think it’s possible. I don’t think I will ever stay eight years, nine years like Pep anymore, because the truth of the matter is, I’m going to have to go through one or two seasons without winning the Champions League.

“I’m going to go one, two seasons without winning the league and I am not sure what type of reaction I will get if I go a season without winning the Champions League. I mean Pep in eight years at Manchester City, nine years won the Champions League once and there were seasons where he didn’t even win the Premier League. But he spent eight years, nine years,” Mokwena continued.

“Klopp has won the English Premier League once, the Champions League once, but he stayed eight years and his parting shot was ‘I left and I felt appreciated from the beginning to the absolute end'”, he concluded.

Mokwena is chasing a treble after missing out on the Caf Champions League trophy where he lost in the semi-final against Esperance.

He will then focus on the forthcoming campaign where he is expected to bring in new and quality players to help him achieve more success in international outings.
